Over 25 years ago as an up-and-coming general contractor in the industry, I was unaware of the material takeoff services that most lumber companies provide. It wasn’t until ten years of calculating my own material estimates that I discovered that this service was available. Unfortunately, I found that the materials lists provided by the lumber companies were not all that I hoped they would be. The lists were not nearly as accurate as the ones that I had polished after a decade of experience. I found that when I used the lists provided by the lumber companies I was not supplied with the proper amount of materials on the job site, either sending for additional supplies or returning a surplus. This beneficial service, which initially seemed like a godsend, became a source of frustration not only to my employees and me, but to my clients as well.
